Brit and American want to move to Belgium

Post by Jifunza! » Wed Jul 25, 2007 1:09 pm

Hi

I'm a British guy with an American (unmarried) partner. I've recently been offered a job in Brussels and want to relocate there with my partner, but this is dependent on my partner being able to work (or at least, on the POSSIBILITY of this) once we arrive.

I've found a lot of information online but nothing that precisely fits our situation. For example, I know that my partner - married or not - may 'freely settle in Belgium', with me, as my British nationality allows me to settle there legally. (http://www.diplomatie.be/en/travel/visa ... XTID=22047)

What I don't know is whether this qualifies her to work, or just to live without working. If it's the latter it's not useful for us.

Any help would be appreciated!

Neither of us are in Belgium at the moment.

I mean in UK - what visa is she on?

Ahh - reread - she's not in UK and not on a UK 'unmarried partner visa'

Jifunza,

Where are you living right now? How long have you been together with your partner?

We are both currently in the UK.

My partner is on leave to remain.

We have been living together (in the Czech Republic) for one year.

I think OP's partner would be able to apply for a Belgian EEA Family Permit (or whatever they call it over there), since he would be an EEA national (UK) exercising his treaty rights in Belgium. Then she would obviously be entitled to work straight away!

I stand to be corrected....
