Uk entry with EEA ID

Post by iameea » Fri Oct 17, 2014 11:40 am

Hi

Currently I have been working in UK for 7 years. My passport will be expired soon, and I'm going to appy for a Portugal ID. I'd like to know if I can enter UK with a valid Portugal ID.

Thanks
iameea

All national ID cards issued by EEA member states presented by the rightful holder are acceptable for travel to the UK.

Thanks

But problem will be stuck around checking in at HK airport...

I hold a valid Macao SAR passport as well, and if I flight from HK airport to UK/Ireland, can airline counter allow me to check in with just the Macao SAR passport which doesn't carry any UK/EEA visa.

Thanks

Macau passport holders are eligible for visa on arrival so I believe airlines will allow you to check-in

however double check with the concerned airlines.

No, if I have valid Portugal ID, can I leave HK airport with Macao SAR passport and enter UK with the Portugal ID. If so ok, I don't need to appy entry visa with my Portugal ID.

I didn't say you need to apply for visa.

with a portugal ID, you won't have problem to enter UK once you have landed at the UK airport, but the airlines check in desk at HK may not accept macau passport and portugese id as valid documents for travel.
however as macao passport holders don't need a visa for travel to the UK and eligible for visa on arrival, hence, I don't believe there should be any issue with your departure from HK.

Ban.s

Thanks for help. Anyway, whenever I flight from HK to UK, at the check-in counter, simply submit my Portuguese ID for checking. Is it right doing so for me flight back to UK without showing my Macau passport?

You'll also need to show your Macau passport.

You mean, at a HK airline check-in counter, they must check a valid passport before issuing me a boarding card, even I can prove my EU citizen status with Portugal Citizen Card.

If so, I will be challenged that I must have show a 6 months return ticket for I use Macau SAR passport to enter UK as a visitor. That is not I want as I have back to UK for keeping my job there.

National ID is a valid travel document for travel ONLY with the EEA and Switzerland. For travel to/from outside EU you'll need to carry a passport hence you need to show your Macau Passport. I believe immigration officer at HK will also need to put a stamp on the passport. If you are allowed to hold dual nationality under Chinese / Macau SAR laws then there should not be any issue with this.
Perhaps you speak with the airlines that you would be traveling for reconfirmation?

EDIT (ban.s): Deleted BerryZoom's post as it was not relevant to this topic; it was also a duplicate post.
