About to Enter Uk on HSMP Need Help and Suggestions

Post by Ritz123 » Sun Jul 29, 2007 7:41 am

Hi All,

Need to know the following.

. What are things mandatory to do once we enter UK.
. What is best way to search for job and get one.
. How to start contracting on our own.

Please moderators make this as a sticky since this is very important phase for people who have qualified for EC to enter UK.

Thanks and Regards

I can try to answer first two questions of yours.

(1) Mandatory things:

Get a bank account as soon as possible

Get yourself registered with NHS (get registered at the GP Surgery nearest to your place of stay-even if it is temporary)

Once you get an accomodation, submit your docs to the council office (through their one stop shop) - basically get billed for council tax !!

Depending on your lease agreement, contact the utility companies to get the account transferred in your name

If are staying in a flat which has a TV - get TV license (can join monthly plan to avoid upfront costs) - if you do not have a TV license, you may be fined upto GBP 1000

I dont think there is any other mandatory thing that you need to do.
You may want to get an oyester card for yourself to avail discounted bus/tube travel

(2) Finding a job:

The best way is to use your own networks

You can also talk to the headhunters who focus on your area of interest

Internet

These are some of the basic things that I can remember. Others are welcome to add to the list.

regards,

Opening bank account

Post by rsathish » Mon Jul 30, 2007 11:07 am

Here is a tip to open a Bank account before landing in UK:

HSBC has a provision for ppl like us to open a bank account - called Passport account.

Apply online for HSBC passport bank account and they would send a acknowledgement letter with a reference number to your home address.

After landing in UK, all you need to do is provide this letter to the nearest HSBC bank - show your identity proof (passport) + current address proof in your home country, to open Passport Bank account in UK.

You get a bank account & an Intl debit card.

For this they charge 60 Pounds or 6 pounds/month. After a year, convert this to regular savings account. No charges from then onwards.

Cheers,
Sathish.

PS: I am yet to try this. :-)
