Deposit of Foreign Law Marriage Certificate ...

Post by agkh » Wed Aug 01, 2007 5:48 pm

Hi again,

Deposit of Foreign Law Marriage Certificate ......is it necessary, what's the benefit in doing this?

and the original certificate would be taken away.

would someone plz advice if I should deposit the certificate with the consul b4 leaving the country? (I'll be abroad for about one year before returning to the UK.)

Can I register my overseas marriage in England and Wales?
No, overseas marriages may not be recorded at a register office. However, you may apply to have your overseas marriage documents, with translations if necessary, sent from the country where you were married and deposited with the General Register Office providing the conditions below are met:

Why does this kind of service exist? Is it, maybe, because the single copy of the marriage certificate would be difficult or impossible to replace if lost or damaged, and so this is a way storing the original safely and getting validated copies on demand when they are needed?

We did not do this, and indeed I see it as a totally unnecessary expense.

We have never encountered any problem whatsoever in the UK using our original (Thai) marriage certificate, together with a certified translation into English.
