Sponsor Benefit Eligibility for Partner Visa

Post by JAPMP » Fri Jan 09, 2015 10:11 am

Hi,

I am currently a sponsor for my girlfriend's unmarried partner visa. The visa requires that I earn £18,600/annum (among other things).

If I were to lose or leave my job, my understanding is that I am not entitled to claim income based benefits. Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

Also, if I were to leave the job to start a freelance business during the 33 month visa period, would I be eligible for housing benefit or would this adversely affect my girlfriend's visa. Further, would registering as self-employed result in in loss of the visa if the HMRC became aware of a change of income?

thanks,

J
