Step by Step from ILR to OCI

Post by the_seeker » Mon Feb 23, 2015 4:30 pm

Hi,
I am trying to get my head around the various things required for the end result of getting British passport and OCI. However, I am getting confused by the various posts. Is there a step by step guide from one leading to the other.

For e.g. is this a valid line of progression after 12 months of having ILR?

Activity -------------------------> End result
===============================================================
Apply for naturalisation -----> Obtain Naturalisation Certificate, then next
Surrender India Passport -----> Obtain Surrender Certificate, then next
Apply for British Passport ---> Obtain British Passport, then next
Apply for OCI ----------------> Obtain OCI, stop.

You might want the British passport before you surrender your Indian passport mate

Thank you Bingo_123 and Manka10. I figured I might be going wrong, thanks for correction.
Within these steps, please can you tell me when is a good point in time to change the surname of a minor?

In regards to OCI query you are advised well above.

There is much more information about OCI in the "other countries" forum.

Timelines approx and series of tasks
-------------------
apply for ILR : PEO (one day + 1 week to receive BRP )
apply for British citizenship (after 1 year) : by post via NCS ( 2 months to 6 months+ )
apply for British Passport : by post only (15 days [including passport interview] )
apply for surrender of IND citizenship: in person via VFS ( 1 week )
apply for indian tourist visa (just in case you want to travel interim) : 3 days
apply for OCI : 2 months + 1 week for 2nd stage of OCI

so ... approx from application for BC (consider 2 months for citizenship approval in most cases ) 6 months in total.

@gbhsmp
I think you are being optimistic about the British naturalisation process taking only two months. You have also left out the step about attending the citizenship ceremony. My citizenship ceremony was two months after I got the approval letter as my local council was booked for weeks (and they have it every week).
Also, my passport application had taken longer than two weeks. And best of luck with getting a slot for the passport interview that easily. Like getting an appointment at the PEO, it can take a few attempts before getting a convenient time or place.
My naturalisation to British passport took 7 months by itself. And that was before this whole good character requirements and further checks were introduced in December 2014. I think you are being very optimistic and would budget atleast 9 months for the processes that you have listed for a straightforward application.
