Move and live in the UK from Australia

Post by JMsmith » Fri Dec 04, 2015 7:04 am

Hi there, any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I currently live in Australia. I would like to move to the UK to be with my partner. I would also like to be able to work in the UK so I can support myself and my partner were needed.

So some questions I guess;
Can I have explained to me the tier levels for work, if that's what I'm reading so far correctly?

What would be my best option to be able to move, live and work in the UK fulltime and marry eventually?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

1. Work Permit - need to be highly skilled or have a shortage occupation and have a UK sponsor with a sponsor licence.

2. Student - expensive

3. Marriage - drastic

4. YMS - need to be under 30

5. Ancestry - need UK born grandparents at least.

Suggest start with the various forum FAQS (in appropriate sub-sections of the forum).

There are 2 main routes here: work or family.

To come on work route you need to be sponsored by an employer & offered a (skilled) job.
See: https://www.gov.uk/tier-2-general/overview

To come on family route, start here: https://www.gov.uk/join-family-in-uk/overview

You need to decide whether to marry before or after coming to UK. (Or to come as unmarried partner).
That helps determines whether you need a fiancee or spouse visa.

Alternately some people come via Europe via Surinder Singh (SS) route.
Its probaby best to digest the above & see if it floats your boat before before contemplating the more exotic SS journey.

Good luck.

Other factors at play here that will influence & direct your immigration journey:
  • your nationality
    partner's nationality (& immigration status in UK);
    your age;
    your skillset;
    your financial resources; (ditto for partner)
    your timeline & long-term gameplan (eg whether to settle in UK; shoot for citizenship; or just give UK a few years & relocate, etc etc)

Do you have some kind of technical experience? Migration would be easier if you have a technical profile.

The unmarried partner route would only be open to you if you have been living together in a relationship 'akin to marriage' for a minimum of 2 years, with the documented evidence to support this.
