Different application routes for main applicant & dependent?

Hi there

I'm going to be extending my Tier 2 (General) visa soon. Since I might have some work related travel in the new year, their preference is to get me to apply using the Premium service (they're bearing all costs of course). However, they will not be covering the costs of my wife's extension. So my question is whether it's necessary for her to apply via the premium route as well or if she can apply via post by submitting her application at the same time or just after I'm hopefully granted my extension using the premium service.

I saw on the Home office site that they recommended applying together but are there any pitfalls in applying via different routes? Any advice would be much appreciated.

She can apply by post once your visa extension is granted and must apply before her current visa expires.
