My EU niece wants to study in the UK for 6 months

Post by rafo » Mon Feb 22, 2016 8:01 pm

Hi all,
I am EU citizen and have been living in the UK with my wife and son for more than 10 years.
My niece is 16 years old and would like to stay with us for 6 months. She would like to continue her studies during this period.
Is this possible? If so, can someone please suggest me how to proceed?
Thanks for your attention.
Regards,
RP

If she is an EU citizen, she can enter the UK freely.

What is it exactly that you want to know or are confused about?

Yes why not, if they will enrol her & she can pay any fees.

What sort of school & study does she have in mind?
English language school?

She wants to continue her secondary education (year 11) in a state funded school in the UK for 6 months. Is this possible?

Hmm, you/she'd have to apply to the local authority. And well in advance too.
Not sure she'd be permitted to enrol as she is effectively in UK on holiday.

Age 16 is also GCSE exam year - not sure how that would work out if she has not followed the same curriculum previously.
Is she a fluent English speaker?

How does she plan to reintegrate with her home country school system & any final exams or matriculation there?

See https://www.gov.uk/guidance/schools-adm ... s-children
- note clause about EEA on short 'visits'.

@Noajthan, I could not find anything in that link about EEA citizens on short visits. Could you point me to the correct quote in that website?

Aha, you are quite right s.s - I had missed the non in first bullet point:
The following children are not entitled to a state education:

children from non-European Economic Area (EEA) countries who are here as short-term visitors - these are children who live abroad but have been admitted to the UK for a short visit (for example as tourists or to visit relatives), and not to study
So it helps OP more than I had realised.
