Canadian PR applying for DV lottery...

Post by igores07 » Mon Nov 05, 2007 8:49 pm

Hi all,

Here are my questions:

If a person is a Canadian permanent resident, and wants to participate in DV lottery:

- Can he legally do that?

- In case he wins what will happen to his Canadian permanent resident status?

- How Canadian authorities are going to react to this situation?

- How American authorities are going to react to this situation?

- Can he hold both Canadian and American permanent resident status at the same time?

- Will he be forced to choose either Green Card or Canadian PR status and renounce the other one?

Any response is greatly appreciated,

igores

Yes.

Winning the DV Lottery does not automatically lead to a U.S. immigration visa.

Not at all, normally.
- How American authorities are going to react to this situation?
Once they issue an Immigrant Visa, they expect the holder to be living in the U.S. pretty much permanently from then on.
- Can he hold both Canadian and American permanent resident status at the same time?
Not for long usually, barring special cases like marriage to a Canadian citizen or cross-border commuting.

Why the need to have both in the first place? If you're happy in Canada, then why do you need a U.S. Green Card.

And if you are lucky enough to get a U.S. Immigrant Visa, then why should you care about keeping your Canadian PR status?

Why not get your Canadian citizenship first and then think about options, if you really want to keep the choice?
