Post by naveenhi » Thu Nov 15, 2007 3:06 pm

Hi there,
I am on HSMP for the past 2 years.I would like to return back to India for good.Just wondering, can I claim back the tax I paid till now since I came to UK.I heard immigrants leaving UK permenantly can claim their tax back(am not sure if this is true?)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards,
Nav.

There is no harm in contacting HMRS to see if you have a claim.

I dont think you can but sometimes there are arrangments between countries. for instance in the usa, you can get credit for your pension from taxes paid in the uk but all of this requires paperwork that should have been done upfront.
do call as victoria suggests

It depends on how much of the tax year you have worked and how much you have earned. If you have had large amounts of time without work and then have paid full tax on earnings, you may find that you are entitled to a rebate because you didn't earn over the threshold but was paying PAYE as if you did.

I understand that the refundable tax, if at all, is that paid as pension and gratuity. No?

No I was talking about NIC
If you have overpaid income tax, then you get a refund plain and simple but normally what is taken out is pretty accurate.

Oh okay.. What percent is NIC of the salary.

Pension and gratuity anyway are not part of contact job compensation. Right?

Is NIC mandatory? What kind of benefit does it translate into?

I hope NIC fund is not classified as public fund from which the immogrants cannot benefit at all.
