visiting uk while waiting on wp application

Hi good day.
My workpermit was submitted in november, I am still waiting to hear if my wp has been granted or not.
The british high commision is currently doing reference checks, and this can take up to 2 months.

Will I be able to visit my fiance (that is australian on 5 year wp) while I wait on the outcome of my wp?

How does this reference checks work and how long does it take generally?

Any help will be greatly appreciated
