Visitor visa and Transit visa

Hi,
We are thinking of applying for a 1 or 2 yr UK Visit visa for a trip planned for June/July of 2017 and are thinking of taking the British Airways for a India Trip from USA this November 2016. Does anyone know if we can use the visit visa to do a transit via London this November or do we need to apply specifically for a UK Transit visa now and then apply for the Visitor visa later on?

We are in USA and are on EAD( Employment Authorization Document) with AP ( Advanced Parole), so apparently we will be needing some visa to go via UK.

Generally speaking if you already have a visit visa you would be permitted to use it to transit through the UK, I've done this in the past.

However whether you would be granted a long length visit visa would really depend on your previous UK immigration and travel history. If this is the first time you are visiting the UK it's unlikely that you would be granted one. In which case you may need to apply for them separately.

But I'm not familiar with the travel document you refer to, so you'll probably need to check by entering your details... Normally you would need your nationality to be entered to establish visa requirements...
