Foreign Births Register

I am looking to register on the Foreign Births Register.

I have 2 paternal Irish born grandparents and am in the process of getting copies of one or both of their birth certificates but as we are talking mid to late 19th century I'm doing a fair bit of digging.

On page 1 of the online application it asks the question:

Did Parent (through whom Irish citizenship is said to be derived) acquire Irish citizenship by virtue of…

Well my father never was an Irish citizen - I am claiming it though his parents - so how do I answer this?

Your father would be an Irish citizen automatically unless he was born in a country that forbids dual citizenship.
