Can I use my mums expired passport for Foreign Births Reg?

Hi All,

My grandmother was born in NI, so I can apply for entry on the register of foreign births. The required documentation states 'Current passport' for my mother, but she's elderly and 'disinclined' to get her passport renewed. Will the expired passport be acceptable? I've tried searching online and calling the London embassy with no joy.
