Renouncing British citizenship from the USA

Hi,

Do I have to to be in the UK to renounce my British Citizenship or I can send the application from the USA and receive the Certificate back to my US address?

I was born in N.Ireland so i'm a Dual UK/Irish citizen but i plan to take the EEA Family permit route to bring my wife over while i'll look for a job etc etc.
Hopefully there is someone with experience with this, i tried to search the board but the search option keeps disappearing when i log in.
