Employer's Ref

Post by speed » Thu Nov 25, 2004 12:06 pm

Hi All

Just been asked by HSMP team to submit letter from my current employer for my work experience giving details about my job.

At the time of Application for work experience I had submitted all the letters that I had received from my employer. Letters do state what my job title is but they don’t mention the responsibilities, and all my experience has been with this employer only since I left Uni.
Problem is I can’t ask my current emp for a letter coz he won’t like the idea of me leaving them. Any suggestion what can be done?

Thanks

I had the same problem. What I did was that I asked one of the "not so senior" managers to recommend me. Fortunately for me, he is quite friendly (I am actually his senior, but I am a specialist while he is a manager).
It can be a tricky situation, and if by any chance you don't get an approval, this can compromise your career with your present place of employment.
I suggest you write the letter yourself, and get him to sign it and stamp it for you, nobody knows better what your job role is than you.

I agree with getting to write your own reference letter. I wrote my own and my line manager had no problem signing and attesting it. Like Alagomeji said, it depends on the relationship yopu enjoy with your employers.

I could not get a letter with detailed responsibilities from HR and so I did the same as the others suggested. I wrote my own letter, had my direct supervisor sign it on letterhead. Approach someone with a senior role, who knows you well and is willing to help.

I posted the documents since I thought they might want to have the original instead of a faxed copy.

I posted the originals. I kept a photocopy for myself however. They may come in useful as a reference later.
