Is an expired passport a valid passport?

Hi,

My wife is applying for Ilr, and I have two queries,

1, I only have an expired passport, is that still a valid passport for id purposes? If not that leads me on to,

2, If I send them my driving licence as well how long do they keep it?

How does your wife qualify for ILR if she has been an overstayer for 6 years??

The is not ILR (indefinite leave to remain),it is limited leave to remain (LLR) valid for a set period of 2.5 years.
