EEA Family Permit- American Citizen Application

Post by nomignomeo » Fri Jan 04, 2019 1:05 am

Has anyone from the USA applied for the EEA Family Permit? If so, what was the processing time that you experienced? What documents did you provide and how much evidence did you provide? Did you have to pay for postage to send the application? Was there an interview that you had to attend? As an American that is planning on applying for the EEA Family Permit soon, I really would like to get as much information from other peoples' experiences and be prepared as much as possible. My husband and I would really like to get things figured out the first time and RIGHT. Any advice would help! Thank you!

Americans don’t need to apply for an EEA family permit to come to the UK, but you will need a family permit if you would like to work while waiting waiting on the residence card which can take up to 6 months.

Are you applying on the basis of marriage to a non-British EEA citizen or on the basis of a durable relationship with one?

I'm American, my partner is Portuguese. I sent the online application in on 15 December and had my biometric/evidence appt 20 December. I'm applying as an extended family member from Lisbon, but still waiting for a response (which I hope is soon because I've got a job to go back to).

I was advised to apply with every inch of evidence possible; plane tickets, bank statements, address proof, texts, pictures, letters from friends/family. It might differ a little since you're married, but the documentation from the home office is pretty thorough. I read everything I possibly could, researched, and got advice from an immigration specialist.

I didn't have to pay for postage, but this may change depending on where you are? Not sure about that. But I went to an appt at a visa centre in Lisbon to give my fingerprints, photo and evidence. They send it all out and I track it through them. I believe there are interviews if the Home Office wants it, but I/my partner haven't been asked so far.

Are you applying from the US? The Home Office has it's processing times data up & you can enter where you'll be applying from.
