Notification of Passport Renewal

Hello, I am in UK on Tier-2 visa, and I have renewed my passport a couple of months ago by my embassy in London due to proximity of expiry date. My question is that is it really necessary to inform home office of this? The reason I ask is that I don't want to unnecessarily raise my profile as with Home Office it is always a risk to get into beuracracy. I am eligible to apply for ILR in a few months and was hoping just to submit my applictaion with the new passport. Has anyone ever got into trouble with their ILR application for not notifying the passport renewal to home office?
