I received my NI number. But have some queries.

1) Is paying NI is optional? Can I pay only tax and not NI?

2) If its optional and If I would choose not to pay NI, is there any harm in that?

Paying NI is not optional, it is compulsary. In fact, your employer will deduct NI from your salary along with Taxes.
