Tier 2 application -- are originals submitted or just scanned?

Hello everyone. May I check if my original BRP and passport need to be surrendered to UKVI upon application, or merely scanned when I do my biometrics at a Post Office? Reason for asking this being I need to physically mail in my BRP to convert my driving licence to a UK one, and I need to plan when mail it in.

If it matters, I am doing a Tier 4 to Tier 2 switch within the UK. Thanks in advance!
