Student Visa - 6 months long. Can he Work?

Post by gollywood » Wed Jul 09, 2008 1:57 am

HI

A friend of a friend of mine (a PhD Student) asked me this one...

His brother is due to arrive in UK - on a 6 month Student visa from Turkey.

Is he able to also work whilst studying? IF yes, what is the criteria?

Ive not heard of a 6 month student visa before - and not sure if he's given me all the info. I asked if his brother was expecting to return after 6 months, but I got the impression he was planning stay to study further.

Appreciate any help.

If the person is coming over on a Student visitor visa, then one must not:
- take employment in the United Kingdom;
- engage in business, produce goods or provide services within the United Kingdom, including selling goods or services direct to members of the public;
- study at a government-funded school;
- be a child under the age of 18;
- undertake part-time (up to 20 hours), or full-time vacation employment;
- undertake a work placement or internship (paid or unpaid) as part of your course of study; or
- extend your stay in the United Kingdom.

Thanks.

My next question is - virtually ALL overseas students that come to study in the UK work - sometimes in multiple jobs, in addition to studying.

How is that possible - I am sure I have read that they can work a certain number of hours/week.

Thanks

They are on student visas (more than 6 months) not on student visitor visas.

have a look whether it is student VISA or student vistor visa
For 6 months visa, it is highly likely he is on student vistor visa.

Is there still the 'Short Term Student' visa? My gf got one the first time - bona fide student visa of six months duration for short courses. No work allowed.
