The story is total rubbish. The figures of 600,000 outstanding asylum claims are from cloud cuckoo land.
The legacy case work team is dealing with all the old and moldy asylum cases; there are about 200,000 to 300,000 cases which need some sort of work. Most have had decisions on them but were put aside for whatever reason in the past. I think they are up to the year 2000 – 2001 with the backlog.
As for 60 people doing the work well that is from the same make it up as you go along fact factory the News of the World obviously use when real stories are thin on the ground.
In one office alone in central London there are 55 case owners dealing with new asylum claims. There are five more such offices dealing with this type of work across the country. Never mind the huge team in Croydon for the legacy work. Try closer to 600 - 700 case owners and case workers dealing with asylum cases plus about 300 another support staff.
There are 200,000 to 300,000 failed asylum seekers (FAS) in the UK, as the absolute lowest estimate, which are just not returnable and will hang around for years to gain what ever form of status they can. How you count those is no doubt up for discussion!!
Amnesty – that is why the removal targets have been increased substantially and why no one is getting any form of descritionary leave after they become FAS, why there are now teams scouring the country looking for illegal workers, why more people are reporting to enforcement centre than ever before, yes that will be that amnesty you’re talking about……
