Appointment Dates for Biometrics

Hello,
I've submitted a PBS visa application from New York and the earliest possible appointment time available for biometrics is end of December 2020, basically the same day as when I would be planning to travel. Seems weird that a backlog would be possible to that extent when you can only apply for the visa within 3 months of your start date. Anyone else had something like this or know how to proceed?
