Travelling while auto extended IRP

INIS had auto extended current IRP validity till the end of the May 2022, just wondering, if your IRP card expires can you still enter back to Ireland till May 2022 or do you need to apply for visa if your card is expired? IRP owner is adult.

do they even issue re-entry visa nowadays unless it's exceptional circumstances?
good question, couldn't find any information about re-entry visas online.

I went to an EU country with an expired card, there was no problem, but also went outside the EU, the airline not allowed me to board. so, I had to apply for a visa.

You cannot enter Ireland without a valid IRP card.

There was a temporary agreement between the government and airlines that allowed people with expired IRP card to come back to Ireland, but that has expired on 15 Jan 2022.

If there's any valid urgent reason for travelling, the applicant can visit the Burgh Quay office or send in a mail application to get a re-entry visa for free.

Is it still possible to apply for visa from outside of Ireland for entry purposes? As in you traveled to your home country and apply for a visa from there if your IRP is expired meanwhile.
