travel rules once achieved citizenship

Post by condyle » Fri Apr 15, 2022 1:07 pm

I am a bit confused

My Thai wife has ILR and is just applying for citizenship

If she is successful my understanding is that she has to cut up and return her BRP ILR card within 5 days . this is the card she normally uses to enter the UK.

1st Question : How is she then able to travel and return to the UK if she doesn't yet have a UK passport? Is she issued with another 'citizen card' similar to the BRP that allows re-entry to UK with her foreign (Thai) passport? (Thai nationals normally need a visa to travel to UK)

2nd Question: Also if we apply for a UK passport my understanding is that she has to send in her Thai passport with the application - does that mean no travel at all until the new UK passport is hopefully granted?

thanks in advance

Steve

There is no "citizen card" for UK citizens. She needs to apply for a British passport and wait until she gets it in hand.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no longer a need to send the physical foreign passport(s) across to HMPO. I believe that scanned copies of all pages are sufficient. However I am not sure of this point. Wait for others to respond in more detail.

Thank you very much for that helpful clarification

I think we may have to alter our travel plans somewhat this Autumn :(

On 2, Yes. Was asked to send any original uncancelled Passports. So, you are not able to travel till you get your British Passport delivered. Supporting docs takefew more days to come back. Currently 5-8 weeks of processing time. Had applied for the British Passport on 10Mar and still waiting
