Switching from IGS to Tier 1 (General) - urgent

Post by dextar » Thu Nov 20, 2008 4:05 pm

Hi, I've spend a weak to find out answer of my question on this forum but could not find anything. So, please apologies me if i am asking some thing which have already discussed.

I did PGD from a UK college in Feb 2008. Now, I have IGS visa and currently working in UK. I was planning to switch to Tier 1(General) next month. I tried to use points calculator given on home office website to see whether i am eligible or not. But I am shocked when i could not find out my UK college on their list. My college is on dfes website. url is http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/recognisedukdegr ... y=Category

Am i doing some thing wrong? My question is why my college is not valid for Tier 1 (General) or is it something which they have missed. I got IGS on this diploma and can also extend as Tier 1 (PSW). But why not Tier 1(General). Please help me. I also contact my college and they said they don't know why home office don't show on their website but they are registered with dfes and you can check.

Please advise me what should i do as I am running out of time.

Thanks in advance.

Your college is not exception. There are several colleges in the U.K which are accepted by HO for the issuance of IGS/PSW but they are not given points for Tier1(General) HSMP.

The siutation is much complicated. I think you have got following options:

Accoridng to Tier1(General) form, points can only be awarded if:

1. Qualification recognised on the points-based calculator

2. Qualification not on the points-based calculator, but a UK NARIC
letter and/or certificate is enclosed

3. Qualification not on the points-based calculator, but a UK NARIC
letter and/or certificate was provided with the applicant’s initial Tier 1
(General) application.

4. Qualification not on the points-based calculator, but a letter stating
the UK academic equivalence from the relevant United Kingdom
professional body is enclosed

5. Qualification not on the points-based calculator, but a letter stating
the UK academic equivalence from the relevant United Kingdom
professional body was provided with the applicant’s initial Tier 1
(General) application.

I think you should concentrated more on option 4 an 5. Just think about these two options and try to find a way out................... and do let me know in the end if you come up with any good result as I also have couple of friends facing similar situation as yours... i may be able to advise them from your experience.

Thanks allot Rizwan. I was assuming the same thing but was trying to double check with some senior member like you. I am going to speak to my college on Monday about option 4 and 5. And let you know if any progress made. In my case my problem is not to claim points for this Qualification. I just need this diploma to full fill my English language requirements. I have 75 points without this diploma. Do, you have any idea other than IELTS which I can use to prove my language requirements? My BCS degree is from Institute of Management Sciences, Lahore. It's accepted on home office points calculator. But unfortunately calculator is not awarding points for English language. Even few of my class fellows got the HSMP in past (before the Tier 1) using the same degree with an additional letter from university. Now, its my turn and its not accepting my degree and not accepting my diploma for English language. I am really disappointed and no idea what should i do?

Please advise me what will be the best option for me?

Thanks Allot

The best thing is to appear for IELTS if you have 30 points for qulaification.

You seem to have reasonable level of English. Should not be any problem for you. If you fail to get 6.5 band in IELTS then you should think about option 4 and 5.

Why take risk/chance of 750 pounds, wait for 1-2 months and get refusal in the end.
