Child First Passport Born Outside the UK

Post by suncatcher » Thu May 12, 2022 10:11 am

Hi All

Would appreciate your advice on the documentation required by HM Passport Office when applying for a First UK Passport for a child born outside of the UK. Both my wife and I are Naturalised British Citizens now living in South Africa.

The child was born in South Africa. For anyone who applied for a UK passport for a child recently from South Africa, Would you please advise what documents you sent to the UK that was accepted for the passport to be issued.

Thanks

When you apply for the passport, the online webpage will generate a list of documents to send (but do note that this may not entirely be accurate!)

When I applied for my newborn's first British passport from the UAE, I initially sent the following to the Durham office:

- Applicant's original attested English birth certificate (this contained the applicant's date of birth, the parent's details including nationality, etc)
- The father's original naturalisation certificate
- They also requested the grandparent's birth certificates from both paternal and maternal side include the marriage certificates but this was not required as the applicant was claiming citizenship through me as a naturalised citizen

6 weeks after the documents were delivered, they then requested the original marriage certificate which I translated into English and then sent back. This wasn't even in the list of initial documents that they requested!

I believe sending the birth certificate, the naturalisation certificate (for either of the parent's not both) and your original marriage certificate should be sufficient.
