I don't think Ireland would have much choice but to replicate the UK's decision on this.

The CTA, and Northern Ireland, are very simple loopholes, there to be exploited, quite easily, by anyone who is non-visa-required for Ireland, but visa-required for the UK.

Do these countries require a visa for entry into the EU ?/ Schengen ?
if they don't, this would be a move in the wrong direction. As it would
isolate Ireland even more.

The CTA is not a collar and leash on the Irish State.

According to the Dutch Embassy list, all African countries, including South Africa, plus Trinidad and Tobago and Bolivia, require a Schengen visa. Thus, taking these countries off the visa-waiver in the UK and Ireland would be in line with the rest of the EU.

The more contentious countries would be Brazil, Venezuela and Malaysia. There may be more reasons for the UK to implement visa rules for Malaysia than other EU countries (issues with BOTC/BOC, renunciations of citizenship, etc), and it may well be that the Schengen countries might also be thinking of changing their rules (e.g. for Brazil in particular) if there seems to be an equally (apparently) high number of overstayers from the country.

This is interesting . . . is there any tangible evidence for the assertion that Britain considered implementing visas for Malaysians on account of the BOC / renunciation issue? The numbers are so small- c.500 or so?

I am generally aware that Malaysia narrowly escaped being included on the list of visa countries, but not sure of the process or how often they review country statuses ?

The BOC issue was very much alive when they last reviewed the status of visas for Malaysians, and if anything has died down, so there is no reason to think that a review is likely anytime soon.
