india-ul travels - passport validity confusion

Post by AjPS » Sun Nov 06, 2022 10:03 pm

Dear members,
I have an Indian passport (valid till early sept23) and UK ILR for 2+ years now.
- Am hoping to travel back to India for 1 month in mid-December 2022.

Q1) I read today that for entry to India, "passport must have min. 6 months" validity --- is this for Indian passport holders returning home too?
Q2) in my case, when I enter India, my passport will have 8 months left and when I fly back to UK it will have 7 months validity left (but my entry to UK should be addressed by my ILR, no???) --- want to know for sure from experts here, thanks.
Q3) For entry to UK, passport "must be valid for duration of stay" - my stay is indefinite - what are the passport validity rule/duration then - or does it not matter?

Am hoping to return and apply for Indian passport renewal in Feb. 2023 in London (when I will still have 6+ months left).

Pls advise,
thanks! (as always)

Q2/Q3 - doesn't matter you have permanent residence in the UK, you just need a valid passport.
Q1 - can't comment on requirements from the Indian authorities.

just to confirm here,
I had contacted UKVI a while back too, and they finally responded with just:

Thank you for contacting UK Visas and Immigration. To enter the UK, your passport at least has to be valid for 6 months or over.

not sure if this is correct??? as I told them I have an Indian passport and UK ILR - and will be heading to India soon wth 8 months left on my passport and return with 7+ months left on passport - but as I have ILR already, I was thinking my passport min. validity does not matter as ILR is valid?

confusing...

as I told them I have an Indian passport and UK ILR - and will be heading to India in few weeks with 8 months left on my passport and return in Dec2022 with over 7 months left on my indian passport (want to renew in london in jan2023 as it expires 6 months post that) - but as I have UK ILR already, I was thinking my passport min. validity does not matter as ILR is valid?
- confusing...
they also pointed to https://www.gov.uk/uk-border-control and said I should have 6 months/180day passport validity?

is this correct?
or am I overthinking and worrying?? @CR001 , @alterhase58 (thanks!)

I would be careful with taking UKVI helpline advice as correct. They did not take account of your residency status!

thanks, yes I think they did not read my full request details.
Your advice makes more sense tbh given my ILR, thanks!
