If you are the holder of a residence card, you will be eligible for a permanent residence card if and when you have lived in the State in accordance with the Regulations for a continuous period of five years. You should make an application for a permanent residence card on Form EUTR3 six months before the expiry of your residence card.
Residency card here is 4EUFam one I assume, so "When 6 months left" won't apply to you, just rack up 4.5 years of residence and go for it.

Q 19. I am currently the holder of a Stamp 4 EUFam Residence Card, which is
due to expire in late 2022. Will I be able to apply to apply for permanent
residence?
Yes. You may be eligible to apply for a permanent residence document using Form
EUTR3. Your application will be considered in accordance with the Free Movement
of Persons Regulations 2015 and the entitlements guaranteed under the Citizens
Rights element of the Withdrawal Agreement.
If your application is successful, you will receive a Stamp 4 Residence permission in
the State instead of a Stamp 4 EUFam permission as the free movement element no
longer applies after 31 December 2020.
