No it wouldn't be cancelled. It would work consecutively. It's a visitors visa and they are both the same. If it was a different visa like a leave to remain, then the visitors visa would be cancelled.
Actually it's always been like that pre-2014. I was always under the impression that the unexpired one would get cancelled whilst a new one was issued. If you critically analyse it, one would have already paid for the visa for X length. It would be robbing one if the time paid for was reduced.
Same way the British passport used to add time on previous passport to the new one. Thereby making it excess 10 years.
That boat has obviously sailed now.
