Traveling back home on expired British passport

Hi there , i need some help please. My Son’s British passport has expired and my wife’s mother is very sick back home and we need to travel urgent. Is there anything i can do so he can travel and come back as well? Thanks

He needs a valid passport to travel.

You can apply for a passport in 24 hours which costs a lot more.
