Change of Occupation Code - Extension/Update?

Hi

As a result of the new visa rules announced yesterday https://www.gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa, my occupation code has changed from 2424 to 2440. The category is Business and Financial Project Mangement Professionals.

My current SWV is ending on 15 Aug 2024. I am confused whether I need to apply for extension, or would it be an Update now?

Your current visa remains valid under the SOC it was issued under. When you need to extend at the point before expiry your employer will issue a new COS, only then will the new SOC code be required.

One of the requirements for extension is, the job is in the same occupation code, but mine is changed from 2424 to 2440, so how come it is an extension?

Extend your visa
You can usually apply to extend a Skilled Worker visa or a Tier 2 (General) work visa if all of the following are true:

you have the same job as when you were given your previous permission to enter or stay in the UK
your job is in the same occupation code as when you were given your previous permission to enter or stay in the UK
you’re still working for the employer who gave you your current certificate of sponsorship




Update your visa if you change job or employer
You’ll need to apply to update your Skilled Worker or Tier 2 (General) work visa if:

you want to change your job and your new job is with a different employer
your job changes to a different occupation code, and you’re not in a graduate training programme
you leave a job that’s on the immigration salary list for a job that is not on the list

Where there has been a change of the general SOC guidelines and a role moves from X to Y but the role itself remains the same that is not a change in role. It is a change of SOC solely due to the change is general SOC.
At no point in the past where the general S0C version, for want of a better phrase, was there a need to apply as a new role for the extension.
You will have to meet the requirements for the new SOC for salary / hours etc.

Sorry, I think I didn't make myself clear.

My job is exactly the same as per previous visa and my employer is the same as well. UKVI has recently updated the Occupation Codes, due to which the occupation code for my job has been updated from 2424 to 2440.

Considering the update in occupation code is from UKVI, when my visa expires later in the year, do I need to apply for extension or an update? I am not changing my job or employer.
