if you get refused can you apply for different type of visa?

Hi,all,please give some advise.We(my husband,me,and our son) applied for the PSW in november2008 and still waiting for the result.My husband got his PGD in June 2008.As long as I know you must have 800 pounds in your account plus extra 530 pounds for each dependant-1800 all together.When were sending our application form there was about 1600 in our account.I just hope they will not ask 530 from my 2 years old son.I was just wondering,what can we do in case we got refused?Can we switch to the different category and apply for the visa?I would appriciate your advise.thank you.
