Date of Birth certificate and Passport

Post by mbxmbx » Thu Mar 19, 2009 6:56 pm

Hi,
I got the Irish citizenship by Naturalisation. However, I don’t have a long form date of birth certificate. A date of birth certificate needs to be submitted with the passport application.
Will it be ok if I submit an Affidavit ? Can anyone please advise me ?

Hi mbxmbx,
Congratulations.
For the information of those still waiting, do you mind telling us:
When did you apply?
When did they ask for more documents?
When did you get approval?
When did you get the certificate?

I'm sure that would be fine. Thinking practically, if you're sending a Certificate of Naturalisation, which is, of course, absolute affirmation that you are an Irish citizen, I cannot see how an application for an Irish passport can be reasonably denied - with or without a birth cert.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA)website states that only Original Long Form Birth Certificates are accepted (..in addition to Certificate of Naturalisation). It goes on to state: 'Photocopies are not acceptable'

See requirements here:
http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=254

Their doesn't seem to be any procedure in lieu of having an original birth long form birth certificate.

Presumably the DFA will insist the applicant get a certified copy of their Long Form Birth Certificate via their Embassy. Although I realise many countries do not have official birth certificates issued before certain years or even in all regions. India is an example.

It is unusual that someone can acquire Irish naturalization using a photocopy of Birth Cert or perhaps affidavit, but the DFA does not accept this for a Irish passport application.

In the USA for example one can arrange a Birth Affidavit:

This is not a big issue. Just get your birth affidavit done while applying for your irish passport and they will not create any issue.

Hi All,
Friend of mine didnt have birth certificate as it was lost. So she sent similar affidavit which she attached with her naturalization application to passport office. And they were ok with it. No questions asked.
On affidavit solicitor has to state the reason and stamp/sign it.
Mine was in non-english, so i attached affidavit and original non-english birth certificate with my application for passport.

Hope that helps
Regards
Tiggs
