we put together a smart file, provided a stack of evidence and indexed it all. the docs we put in are as follows:

-our passports
-marrigae certificate/copy of COA/wedding cards/receipt of hotel we stayed in on night of wedding
-invitation cards
-wedding pamphlet from the registrars with our names in it
-reception menu
-receipts of my engagement ring/our wedding rings
-a few congratulatory cards on our engagement
-bunch of utility bills bearing both our names of previous and current addresses
-original copy of "holding deposit receipt"/tenancy agreement with both our names and signatures
-pictures of each and every room of our rented 2 bed apartment
-my employment details i.e contract/pay slip/ NI letter
-hubby's employment details including correspondence from work on several wage increments, info on his entitlement to commision and annual bonus
-hubby's bank statements, although we only had £1,500!, and 3 of his payslips(one showing a huge commision, another an end of year bonus and a normal one)
-a break down of our monthly outgoings
-and finally a cover letter basically explaining the our state of finances, especially having just got married, a potential hike of our earnings if i got the visa as i have very good qualifications..work without restrictions. we took care not to overdo it.
