Wrong name printed on Schengen visa

Post by albestus » Tue May 12, 2009 7:42 pm

Hi Everyone,
I applied for Schenge visa thru Italy embassy. I got the visa but the name printed on the visa is wrong. Instead of SHWETA it is printed as SHEWTA. Can anyone please advice :
1) What kind of problem can I face while travelling, if I dont get it corrected?
2) I have to travel on 20th May, hence I dont have much time now. Does anyone know how long can it take to ammend?

Best to give them a call to find out. As it's their mistake, they might ask you to go in and have it corrected there and then. You've still got about a week to sort it. So the earlier the better.

I would worry enough to request from the embassy that it be rectified on a priority basis. It is never an advantage to travel with a visa that bears a (slightly) different name to that in the passport!

The big question is will they do it quickly? You should always check immediately on pickup if the data on the visa is correct.

The IO is certainly required to check the consistency (the ariline staff will also check) of all data but will a simple spelling mistake really have any repercussions for the visitor? Who's responsibility is the correctness of data anyway? I suppose it's the passport holder.

Hi allbestus,

I had this problem once with a French Schengen Visa, with a single alphabet in my name being incorrect. The visa was sent back to the embassy, and they issued a handwritten correction with a stamp and the correcting officer's signature on the passport, just above the visa sticker. I had no problems at immigration, not even a question as to what the correction was (at London Waterloo, traveling by Eurostar).

I would recommend you get some correction done with an embassy stamp, just to be safe.

Cheers,
~ Bubblegum.
