How can i get a professional job in Canada

Post by jay09 » Wed May 20, 2009 1:50 pm

Hi all,

This is for my friend.

He is a UK resident and works as a professional Environmental Engineer. It is his intention to relocated and work in Canada, but does not really know how to go about it. He has been applying for various positions online (on companies websites) but it appears they are not keen on taking foreign professionals.

Does anyone know about Canadian companies that are into Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering that would like to recruit UK professionals. Positions suitable for him would be an Environmental Engineering position (have 2+ working experience) in geotechnical and environmental engineering consultancy.

Please note that he went for the Canadian Job Expo last year and it apperead most of the big companies in attendance paid lesser attention to the Environmental specialist.

Any advice/link will be helpful

It'll always be tough to find work as a foreigner until you're actually in Canada with a VISA but I don't want to discourage you from trying.

Try some websites such as www.monster.ca, www.workopolis.com/ca, and www.elance.com For more general jobs I usually mention craigslist.org but a specialized engineering/environmental position isn't likely to get posted there although many good jobs do.

Tell your friend to keep applying to those same company sites as well and experiment with his strategies and approach and try to develop rapport with those companies if he can.

While it's not easy, if you can't find an opportunity, make one.

You may also benefit from visiting Canada and applying in person. You'll still have your hands full trying to get a travel visa switched to a work visa but employers are more likely to hire someone they've actually met. It's not that you're a foreigner, it's that you're foreign to them meaning that they haven't seen your face in person and won't know if "they have a good feeling" about whether or not you're right for the position and more importantly the work environment/office atmosphere you'll be working in.

I wish you luck.
