South African dual passport holder traveling to France

Post by AndreIncredible » Sun Jul 05, 2009 4:10 am

Hi,
I'm a South African with a SA passport and a British passport, I'm planing to travel to France and I'm struggling to find out if I need any other sort of documentation to enter or can I just arrive and flash my little brown book?

I've never used my British passport before, my mother was born in England and I applied for it from within SA.
And to make things a little more tricky I'm currently living in China. My residency permit to stay here was issued in my SA passport.

Will I need to provide proof that I have a place to stay or enough money and a plane ticket home or anything like that? I've tried to get hold the French embassies over the phone but its tricky here and there's no embassy in my city.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Andre.

If you have a valid British passport, I dont see even the slightest problem for you to move freely within the EU (and from outside the EU into the EU) - for the immigration officer (who you very likely won't even meet if you enter France from Britain) you are simply a British citizen.

No need to show anything but your passport.

You can travel to any EU member State and stay there up to three month without any requirement but showing the British passport.

So:
- no return ticket needed
- no housing or address necessary
- no money required
etc.

Thanks for the input!

I was just unsure about going straight into France from China rather than entering via England.

Xi'an is a great place, I'm quite sad to leave.

With an EU passport you can also, if you desired, work in France or any other EU member state. If you want to stay for longer than 90 days, you may need to do some minor formalities.

Are you married or do you have a long term relationship? They, even if they are non-EU, are also covered by your right of residence and working.

Great, I'm not married but I would like to find a job and stay a little longer.

You can work in any EU country for as long or short as you want. Work for one day in France and then ten years in Germany...
