Nationality Acknowledgement Letter

I am applying for British Registration for my children for the first time and don't know much about it except whats in the MN1 Guide. I have posted the docs but read something about an acknowledgement letter for nationality applications.

Does anyone know whether applicants always receive an acknowldgement letter from IND?

How much time does it usually take for it to arrive? What can I do if I don't receive this?
