After loosing job, how long you can stay?

Hi All,

Suppose, someone who is working in UK on work permit, looses his job and his Work Permit is cancelled by the employer. Within how many days the person has to leave the country or find another job and get the new Work Permit. On website, home office uses the word "as soon as possible" but does anyone know the exact number of days a person is allowed to stay legally in the country after loosing job and work permit is cancelled.

28days to depart or get new employer

The 28-day period starts when you receive the letter from the home office. When your employer writes to home office stating that your employment has been finished, the home office writes a letter to you advising you to either change status or leave the country within 28 days. Usually it takes a couple of months to complete these formalities. Basically as soon as a person looses a job he/she should immediately start looking for another one and get further leave on the basis of a new work permit or hsmp.

When the employer is supposed to write to the home office? After giving notice from either side or after the last working day?

Not sure, but I would assume that even if the employer informs home office at the beginning of the notice period, Home office should start there calculation from the end of the notice period as logically that is the time when the employment seize to exist.

Under either way the process should take probably a couple of weeks (if not months) so the best course would be to start looking for a job immediately or apply for an hsmp if possible.
