How many months can the Tier 1 (General) visa holder stay ou

Hi friends,
If someone get the Tier 1 (General) visa from outside, does he/she has to fly to UK immediately or he/she can stay outside UK for some months? How long can they stay? What will happen if he/she stays back home for a year after receiving the Tier 1 (General). I understand that he/she will lose one year of residency that can add in 5yrs residency for permanent residency. Apart from this, are there other major losses because of 1 yr abroad residency?
