CTC amount reduced by 60%

HMRC asked me my last 2 years annual gross income and suddenly reduced CTC which is in my wife's name by 60% although my gross income changed just by fraction in last 2 years.

I and my wife claim together and my wife is house wife.

Should I be going back to HMRC to check if they may have made an error or this is normal.

CTC shouldn't change - how old are your children?
