One needs to travel to UK within 6 months of getting Tier 1 General or it gets void. Is this true?

No that is not true.. it is valid till the last date on your visa validity..

Hi Ramesh, how do you know this? Did you check this with British immigration team or personal/third party experience?

6months is the validity of the passport expiry validity... pls go to UKBA Tier1(G) FAQ and you will find the same answer that you can travel to uk untill ur visa is valid.. do some search mate

You can travel anytime till your visa is valid.
