Broken down marriage - what way forward

My friend had a student visa; then she got married to a holder of a British passport. I think she got married so she could get permanent residency here. Shortly after getting married she claims the husband was mean to her and atleast in one instance she reported him to the police.

The relationship broke down within a year and she moved out of the husband's house while pregnant for him and later gave birth to her daughter. She has had no contact at all with the husband since moving out. Three months after her current two year marriage visa expires she would have spent 10yrs legally here.

1) What is her immigration status currently ?

2) An immigration lawyer has advised her to report that she is no longer living with the husband. Is this a wise course of action ?

3) What is her best option to pusue in order to get permanent residency in the UK ?
