I would like to find out if it is possible to apply for EC now for myself and kids and have the kids join me in March next year. Will their EC period have expired or is it only that of the main applicant expires.

The EC stamp is good for 12 months (on your own and your dependants' passports). It is important for the main applicant to enter the UK as soon as possible (to find a job and to be more settled in at renewal time), but the dependants can wait.
