Entered UK

Post by baskey » Sat May 08, 2004 12:43 am

Hi friends,

I have just come to UK 2 days before and job hunting starts now. Can any one suggest that which news paper to look for Engineering vacancies?. I hardly find few openings for chemical Engineers. I would be happy to share with any of the Chemical engineers under HSMP and now in the UK.

Secondly, i came to know for applying for provisional driving licence one must send original passport along with application. Is it really true or is there any other proof can be attached?

Also to apply for NI no. that receptionist asked me to show any interview letter or job offer to open NI. IS it OK?

Any comments are welcome.

Regards,

sashi

I am just curious, are you currently renting a flat? What are your arrangements for accommodation?
As for internet access, are you accessing the internet from an internet kiosk or do you have internet access at home?

Thanks mate.

Kayalami should guide towards how to get Chemical Engineering jobs - send him/her a PM

There are some post offices were they can verify your passport - am not sure whether this applies to UK ppts only

i have arranged accomodation at Tottanham area for £ 175 including internet and phone. It is a 3 bed furnished house shared by 6 people. One can cook if want.

I think that it is common in LOndon to share like this. BUt of course for me it is a first experience after my college hostel.

hope this helps you.

Welcome to the U.K. What is your specialism/ experience within Chemical Engineering - oppportunities depend on this.

Yes it is true that you submit your passport. Further you cannot apply for a licence before establishing residency = 6 months. There is also an option to submit a birth certificate but the DVLA do not have to accept this and IMHO will probably cease doing so at some point in time as driving licences become the primary ID card - in all cases your application and photos need countersigning. The Post Office checking system applies to British Citizens applying in person with their British Passport as evidence of their Nationality.

You not only need a job offer but also a contract of employment and proof of UK residence in the form of utility bills, bank statements etc.

Hi Baskaran

If you have a valid driving license from your home country you are authorised to drive the prescribed vehicle upto a year from your entry into UK. Infact if your DL is from certain listed countries it could be exchanged for a full UK DL. This is my understanding of about 2 years back rules. Check DVLA website www.dvla.gov.uk for any changes.

Best of luck for yr job search.

Apologies for the delayed response - your post got buried away in this busy forum. I work in Oil and Gas but know the pharmaceutical field also has some good opportunities. The UK is more of an R&D driven arena than a production environment in relation to your home country. The industry is very tightly regulated and your validation/ QC/TQM skillset is a definite plus. I am not too sure about capital investment in the field but recall the majors e.g. GSK, Pfizer etc coming towards the expiry of patents on some of their big sellers which coupled with pressures on bringing new stuff to the market and the issue of generic branding may be a concern. Added to these are cost pressures from the NHS. Are you a registered member of your home engineering association? Also have you brought your certifications? Both would be an asset.

The following sites are a good start to see what's available.

Instituion of Chemical Engineers - joining them is a definite plus as it gives you access to their employment service.

Thomas Telford - The IChemE recruitment consultancy

For engineering vacancies in the press check:

Monday - The Independent

Tuesday - The Daily Telegraph, The Sun

Wednesday - The Evening Standard, The Irish Post

Thursday - The Daily Express, The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror, The Daily Star, The Guardian, The Sun, The News Letter

Friday - The Scotsman, The Herald, The Belfast Telegraph

Sunday - Scotland on Sunday, The Sunday People, The Sunday Express, The Sunday Telegraph, The Independent on Sunday, The Sunday Times

Good Luck

Dear Kaya,

I am happy to see ur reply. Many thanks for your detailed answers. I have not registered member of engg. association in my country but i try to register here as per your advice.

Regarding engineering opportunities at the daily newspapers, i find very few. I have not seen any single advt. to match my profile. All i see is lots of hard jobs. but of course i have not seen all the papers, you have mentioned. Let me do that.

But i get lots of good response from UK Job consultants. But nothing thro so far. But it seems for me all engg. jobs getting filled up thro them. Am i right? Is UK is well known for employment agents?

By the way, r u also a Chemical Engineer?

Thanks for ur time and valuable info.
Regards,
