Government may lift the minimum salary for PBS to 40,000?

Post by ukswus » Fri Jun 25, 2010 12:59 am

"Because the government fears that the prospect of a cap will lead to a surge in visa applications, it is considering immediate interim measures to stem the tide, including lifting the minimum salary that migrants need to earn to £40,000."

I have no idea if this applies to Tier 2 visa only, or to all categories, so I am posting it here.

It is a blunder

Post by GSOtodd » Fri Jun 25, 2010 6:00 pm

nothing to worry about. No one else has reported on it and if it were suggested, don't you think it would have been posted as news on the workpermit.com site. It is all a blunder. Also, the FT said that damian green was opposed to the caps but if you'll think back, he was the one that actually was in FAVOUR of the annual limit on immigration. So, it is all a blunder.

If one is to believe Daily Mail, the cap will apply also to those already in the UK from 2011:

No legislation is needed and the move can be implemented immediately. Initially, it will cut the number of work permits given to skilled workers by around 5 per cent, or 1,300. However, in the long-term, far more dramatic cuts are expected.

That is because the interim cap does not apply to migrants already here, or so-called inter-company transfers where big companies send staff from overseas for a fixed period. The final measures will include these categories.

So, how could it apply to those already here in the UK?

At the point of extension?

If this happens, Tier 1 holders had better prepare for a big legal fight.

ah I see, well, can we actually (or should we) believe everything the daily mail says? Also, I think it would be Tier one and two who should be prepared for a fight. There are very professional and educated people in Tier 2 as well but just don't have the salary for Tier 1. I missed it by just a couple of £.

So if the daily mail is right, anyone who gets in BEFORE April 2011 will be ok, but after that, anyone who gets in will have to face the new criteria at extension time?

Yes, you are right. I am sure this should be a common undertaking.

I think they go further than this. The way I understood them, they imply that the cap will apply even to those already in the country NOW, eg at the point of extension. But then again, it's Daily Mail.
